Manage Your TransUnion Credit Report

By LaToya Irby, About.com

Your TransUnion credit report is one of the three most important credit reports you have (your Equifax and Experian credit reports are the other two). Because you never know which credit report a creditor or lender is going to check, it's important that you manage all of them.

Order Your TransUnion Credit Report

You have a few options for ordering your TranUnion credit report.

  • For free from www.annualcreditreport.com. Federal law grants you one free copy of your TransUnion credit report each year. You can also order your annual TransUnion credit report by calling 1-877-322-8228 or by mailing a request form (Adobe viewer is required to open the request form).
  • You can purchase your TransUnion credit report directly from TransUnioncs.com for $14.95. Unlike the other two credit bureaus, TransUnion doesn't offer a free credit report and credit score in exchange for a trial subscription to their credit monitoring program which is offered through TrueCredit.com.
  • Finally, if you order a 3-in-1 credit report from any of the numerous online vendors, you'll receive your TransUnion credit report as well as your report from Equifax and Experian.

Dispute TransUnion Credit Report Errors

As you review your TransUnion credit report, you might discover errors. You have the right to have these errors removed through a dispute process.

Your credit report will typically come with instructions for disputing errors. For example, when you order your TransUnion credit report online, you'll be given a link that you can use to make your dispute.

It's also possible to make a credit report dispute in writing. You can use the Request for Investigation form offered on TransUnion's website or write your own credit report dispute letter. Highlight the errors on your credit report and send any supporting documents you have to TransUnion's credit report dispute address:

Fight Identity Theft On TransUnion Credit Reports

If you've been a victim of identity theft, it's important that you let TransUnion know. That way, you can have your credit reports flagged to prevent further theft. Anyone who pulls your TransUnion credit report will be warned to take extra steps to confirm your identity before granting credit. Fraud alerts generally last 90 days or one year for active duty military who are sent overseas.

You can place a fraud alert on your TransUnion credit report by calling 1-800-680-7289 or sending a written request to TransUnion Consumer Solutions, P.O. Box 2000 Chester, PA 19022-2000. If you place a fraud alert with any of the three credit bureaus, that bureau will automatically notify the other two.

A security freeze on your TransUnion credit report will lock your credit reports preventing inquiries until you unlock it with a PIN or password. You can freeze your TransUnion credit report online, by phone by calling 1-888-909-8872, or by sending your written request (along with any applicable fee) to TransUnion, Fraud Victim Assistance Department, P.O. Box 6790 Fullerton, CA 92834.

Checking Your TransUnion Credit Score

Your FICO score is the credit score most widely-used by lenders. You can purchase your FICO score based on TransUnion credit report information from myFICO.com. You can check your TransUnion-calculated credit score (a FAKO) for free at CreditKarma.com. Learn more ways to order your TransUnion credit score.
