Add Waiters to the Growing List of Possible Identity Theives

Wednesday May 2, 2007
Would you let a complete stranger walk off with your credit card as long as he promised to bring it right back? If you've ever used your credit card at a restaurant, that's exactly what you've done. Think about it. Do you really know what the waiter is doing with your credit card once he walks away from your table?

According to Associated Press, waiters in 40 restaurants across the country recorded credit card information from patrons and used the information to make about $3 million in purchases.

When it comes to security and privacy of information, don't give anyone benefit of the doubt. If your credit card (and even your debit card) has to leave your sight, use cash instead. Monitor your monthly credit card statement closely and report any suspicious activity to your creditor immediately.
