According to the U.S. Courts, the number of bankruptcy filings increased by 38% in 2007. The total number filed was 850,912 versus 617,660 filed in 2006. Of the filings, 519,364 were Chapter 7 and 324,771 were Chapter 13, the two major types of consumer bankruptcy.
