How Long Can a Repossession Stay on My Credit Report?

Question: How Long Can a Repossession Stay on My Credit Report?

Answer: A repossession will appear in the public records section of your credit report and remain for seven years. If the auto lender sues you and obtains a judgment from the court, that listing can remain for as long as your state's statute of limitations or seven years, whichever is greater.

If an erroneous repossession is on your credit report – including repossession older than seven years – you can use the credit report dispute process to have it removed.
