Toyota Rewards Visa Review

Both Toyota and its luxury car division, Lexus, have rewards credit cards that help you earn points toward your next vehicle purchase. But in some ways, this card is a better deal than the Lexus Pursuits Visa card; it certainly gives you more options for cashing in your points to buy a car.

Both cards let you earn five points for every dollar you spend at the dealership. With this card, you earn one point per dollar everywhere else; the Lexus card lets you earn 1.5 points per dollar on purchases outside the dealership.

Points are worth a penny a piece, so 10,000 points are worth $100.

Points can redeemed for service, parts and accessories at Toyota dealerships, rentals at Toyota Rent a Car, and the purchase or lease of a new or "certified used" Toyota. The Lexus card lets you redeem your points for new vehicles only.

The Toyota card also lets you redeem as many points as you like; by contrast, you can only redeem Lexus points up to 10% of the value of the vehicle price.

The number of points you can earn is capped: Up to 200,000 points, or $2,000, per year on purchases made at participating Toyota dealers, and up to 5,000 points, or $50, per billing cycle on purchases outside the dealership.

The Toyota card also lets you help a family member or friend buy a new car. While you can't give your points to someone else, you can help them buy a car with your points provided you're present at the transaction. The Lexus card doesn't let you do that.

Unused points expire after five years in both programs.

Recommendation

It's too bad the points earned on either the Toyota and Lexus cards aren't interchangeable. If you have the Toyota card and start earning points and later decide to buy a Lexus, it doesn't appear you can use those points.

If you prefer other brands of automobile and are interested in earning points toward a future vehicle purchase, check out the GM Flexible Earnings Card or the new Chrysler MasterCard.
