A recent study by the Policy and Economic Research Council revealed that less than 1% of credit report disputes result in an credit score increase of more than 25 points. Only .5% of the study participants received enough an increase to move their credit score out of the risky borrower zone.
This new study reveals a significantly lower credit report error rate than what's been quoted for several years. In a 2004 article, CNN reports a 25% error rate revealed in a study by the Public Interest Research Group. A SunTimes article from February this year quotes an 80% credit report error rate, but the article doesn't mention a specific study.
No matter what any study says, it's still in your best interest to review your credit report and dispute any errors you find. If the error is removed, it could improve your credit score a lot, or it may not improve your credit score at all, but it all depends on the other information in your credit score.
