Also look for signs to ensure a site is reputable and has some level of security. For example marks such as BBBOnline, Hackersafe (now Macafee), TrustE, etc… all indicate some level of trust with the site
Also look for alternative payment options that give you better guarantees and some even do not ask for credit cards or do not ask you to disclose any financial information.
