Is FreeCreditReport.com a Scam?

By , About.com Guide   September 4, 2009

Follow me on:

FreeCreditReport.com wants you to believe they're the place to go if you don't want to end up "selling fish to tourists in t-shirts," living in your new in-laws basement, or driving around in a used subcompact. Unfortunately, FreeCreditReport.com might not be all that it's cracked up to be. I tested out the service and put together a review detailing my experience: FreeCreditReport.com review. If you've ever used the site, leave your own review.

Please make sure you READ THE FINE PRINT. They will ask you for a credit card number during trial period and if you dont cancel within 9 days your card will get billed a monthly fee. I am sick of companies doing this!!!

(3) Deborah Ward says:

Steve is exactly correct. I spoke to a solicitor via telephone offering me their service which I accepted. After finding out it was not a free service, I cancelled it. They continued to charge me for 4 months even though I called each time it appeared on my card. I called my bank explaining I was never told there would be a monthly fee charged to my card. They called them immediately and had all the costs taken off and told me they had numerous calls with the same complaint. FREE Credit Report.com is NOT FREE and is not an honest company.

(4) Peter says:

Why would anyone trust a credit service that tricks you?! Unlike “MyFico.com” and others which at least say that the TRIAL period is free, this site says nothing about that, and you have to read the “terms and conditions” (like anyone does that) to find out that you will be charged monthly forever until you cancel. Because I am a busy person and travel frequently, I didn’t notice this line item on my credit card bill for about 4 months (of course, this was my fault). Anyway, after talking to this company about this practice, they seemed totally insensitive to this “trick” they pull on people. Even after I unsubscribed from the service, I got an e-mail from them asking if I wanted one more “instant” credit report for free. I thought, “What the heck” and tried it and voila, you guessed, it I had to enter my credit card number and read the fine print to find out I would again be charged for an indefinite period. I would never trust this company.

(5) Audrey says:

I tried to get a credit report from this company and it would not go thru so I entered the information again This time I got the report. When I got my credit card bill, I had been charged for the credit report and also for the first month’s credit monitoring. When I called them, they told me I had ordered two reports, and the first one was free, but I had to pay for the second one. Why on earth would I want two reports. They refused to take the charge off. As far as I am concerned, this company is a scam.

I signed up for credit free credit report.com about 6 months ago. I was unable to log back into the account as soon as I logged out. I contacted them and they told me that I was not in their system and that the card number I was giving them was not a valid card number (yet they are charging it every month and it says “Free Credit Report.com” on my statement. I have been trying to cancle this for six months now. I was given a mailing address to send in my request for cancelation and refund but have not heard a thing. THIS COMAPNY NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!! I had to cancle my bank card and have it reinstated. THIS IS CRAP! DONT DO IT PEOPLE, DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(7) erin says:

Beware of Free Credit Report. All the above comments are correct, they’re intention is for you to sign up for a “free”
trial membership and hope you will forget to cancel it. They bill at the beginning of the month, so if you remember and cancel after they’ve already billed you, you’re still stuck paying for the rest of the month. At $15 a month it’s not the worst injustice that’s ever happened, but it is very deceptive and crummy on their side. When I spoke to their customer service they were condescending and rude, continually reminding me of the “terms and service” box I clicked and that there was nothing they would do for me. Not sure if any free credit sites are any better, but be very careful with this one.

(8) Never again says:

THESE THIEVES…Never try to do free credit report…they are completely untrustworthy and unhelpful. On calling to cancel this ridiculous service that I was tricked into getting, I was hung up on twice, (once by vicky, once by May) they refused to let me talk to a supervisor saying: 1. the sup was in a meeting 2. they did not know who their sup was, or 3. outright hanging up on me when i asked for a sup.
JESUS these guys are EVIL. And they have ALL this info on me, my cc #, my social, my whole history…a scary thing.

(9) Willie says:

I was aware of the charge but the tricky part was when I tried to cancel my service the girl did not understand that I did not want an extention or extras for free I just wanted to cancel. I even had to be rude and ask her if she understood plain english, and then I explained it to her in spanish. After threating to call my bank to cancelled the service. Also the service does not include all of your credit reports from the three agencies, and the information is old and wrong when I compared it to my banks credit service.

(10) Nutmeg Nanny says:

They tried to make me eat the $15 charge but luckily my bank stepped in and took the charge off. When I called the company and spoke with their customer service they refused to refund me and when I transferred to a manager I was greeted with a women who was rude and snotty. She laughed when I told her I wouldn’t pay the money and then tried to say because I was on the site that day (to see why I was charged money) I was using their service and they would do nothing. As I stated before I’m happy my bank stepped in and made it right. Do not ever use their service. It’s a scam! Making $15 off thousands of people a day. What a joke of a company.

(11) Carmen says:

DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. Do not give your credit card number to them. I started to fill this out online and then realized I must be nuts. I cancelled out of the screen and never finished filling it out. They still charged me 14.95 on my debit card. When I noticed I called them and they cancelled my membership. I checked my bank statement and they did credit me for 2 months but on same day they credit my statement they charge me again for 14.95. I call again and they say they can only credit my account for 2 months. Despite argueing with the lady who is obviously from India with a very bad staticy phone connection, I realized I was wasting my breath and I promised her that I would help put creditreport.com out of business and she would lose her job. The first person I talked to on the phone (from India) sneezed and accidentally hung up on me….or did he? So I had to call back. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE CREDIT REPORT.COM. SCAMMERS BIG TIME. All you have to do is go to each of the credit report companies directly to get your free credit report. Not necessary to go thru creditreport.com and be scammed.

December 31, 2009 at 5:08 pm
(12) Zack says:

They make you sign up for a “free trial” which they claim you can cancel within 7 days. I signed up and got my report, but when I went to cancel they said it would take a month to unsubscribe me, so I ended up being billed for 2 months ($30) totally bullshit!

(13) mjotting says:

I am not sure why people are saying it is a SCAM simply because they are too lazy to read the fine print, or use common sense. Nothing is free in life!. Good expression to remember. Stop leaving bad reviews because your are upset you did not do the homework all companies are like this. I think its a great idea to monitor your credit monthly. It takes onetime for someone to get in their and F it up. In this day and age its not a bad Idea to be concerned for your well being. So What is so wrong about knowing the minute someone is opening a credit card or inquiring on your credit. There is nothing wrong with being in the head of the game. Plus they offer assistance and help u if something does happen. It is no different of a scare tactic like someone having Health Insurance, car Insurance, or even taking medicine for things like the flu when your body can fight it off.

(14) CRT says:

I ordered the “Free Credit Report”
Two months later I discovered that I have been paying a membership fee of $14.95 every month.
Canceling my membership could have been easier.
This is a scam. There should be a means of getting a free
score or of paying once for one score.

January 14, 2010 at 2:22 pm
(15) Katie says:

This company is terribly run. I signed up and then cancelled on the same day…at least I thought I did. I was billed a month later. I called that very day and spoke to another employee and her supervisor. I asked repeatedly for a statement in writing about cancellation. I never received one. I was refunded for that transaction but now 30 days later I was just billed again. I guess I just have to call every month to get another refund until they are finally shut down.

January 17, 2010 at 3:29 pm
(16) Johanna says:

I just wanted the 1 month membership and decided not to call after the 1 week trial, as of now, it is 1 week, not 9 days like some of you are saying. I just noticed my credit card being billed 99.95$ for the annual membership, so for the ones that said this is not a SCAM, I have a clear example that THIS IS A REAL SCAM! I called them just now, today is day 9 after I signed up, and they said, sorry but we cant give you a refund, I read all out to the rep that the website clearly says that after 1 week you would be charged a monthly membership not a year one! I was so furios I could not believe they really were trying to steal my money! I asked to speak to a supervisor and after going over the situation with him again, he said, fine we will refund you the 99.95$. I would never ever use their services again!

January 23, 2010 at 11:38 am
(17) Dawn says:

I just had the same problem that Hans below had. I have been billed 14.95 for months (via a ‘free’ offer through my credit card). I went to the website to get into my account, and it didn’t recognize me. I searched for the phone number, got a overseas call center employee who only wanted my SSN number to look up my account (not my name, ever) and guess what…they have no clue who I am, but now have my SSN. I tried to cancel the account, but they said they couldn’t because they have no clue who I am. where is this money that has been billed to my credit card going??? My card was just cancelled because it is considered FRAUD. Who knows what information they have, now I have to worry because they have my SSN, willingly given by me because I thought I was a customer. Don’t fall for it.

(18) Sam says:

SCAM!!! Ordered the free credit report, looked it over and called and canceled. $25 charge shows up on my credit card and I called the CC company and put me through to free credit report people and I was told that yes I had canceled but because I looked at the free report there was $25 charge. Called back the CC company and told them I wanted to dispute the charge. They told me I could dispute the charge but because the company has fine print on there site some place that says if you look at the free report they will charge you I will loose the dispute. Scam Scam Scam!!!

(19) Galina says:

I hate this stupic company. I was not being careful enough and deleted my cancelation email. They kept charging me for 9 months. When i called them on it, they said they would cancel right away, but I could not get any money back.
So it’s not really free, now is it!

yup..just canceled my account after 2 days of having it…they canceled it alright, but says they cant refund 24.95 back to me..i said i thought the trial was for 14.95 and a 7 day trial….well that’s not our charge sir, that’s from trans union and Equifax, not us” we work with experian or whatever the hell it was….no refund sir….grrrrrrrrrr…..im not getting all fired up over this stuff……DO NOT USE..DEF A RIPP OFF… NEVER AGAIN!!!! waste of money i barley have

(21) Scammed says:

This service is a complete scam. Please do not use it. There entire business model is centered on tricking people into thinking it is free and then charging for a monthly membership.

The officially *free* report actually comes from annualcreditreport.com.

(22) Beth Curby says:

This website is a scam! Do not use it! When I called in, the staff was extremely incapable and argued with me about giving me a refund! They are less then trust worthy!

(23) Andrea says:

Please. Be careful with this place I had no idea that I was suppose to call or I would be charged. When I seen the charge on my bill I called them and they would not give me my money back because I had 7 days to call and it was the ninth day. Had no idea just be careful with them they suck because I could of just got my credit report some where else.

(24) Jacqui says:

They scammed me, and refused to remove the payments from my credit card. I clicked something on my home page by accident, and unlike most online purchases there is no confirmation screen. There is really no indication that you just purchased something at all. I realize that day that it was charging me(24.95, and then a reoccuring fee of 14.95) , and called to cancell. The man on the phone said it was cancelled and then i recieved another fee the next day. I called repeatedly, and will continue to fax my disputes to my credit card company and to them. DO NOT USE THIS SITE

February 11, 2010 at 8:44 pm
(25) Barbara in California says:

I like “Free Credit Report.Com”. I read it all before I used their services. Quick reports, tells you if it is too soon (24 hours) since your last one. While a 3 credit report monitoring costs $24.95 for a one time report…I still haven’t a complaint about the company itself. While reading small print is very boring, it does spell out everything you need to know. There is a scoring delay difference sometimes between them and MyFico…but my Fico charges for individual reports and Experian is no longer allowing consumers to purchase their score via Fico since 2009. Either way, you see what you need to know about your credit!

Good luck!

FYI, I use Paypal virtual credit cards, that way, if I decide I don’t like service from a particular business, I can cancel my card online, and Paypal will not pay them. Just an FYI to those out there who use their “real” bank debit or credit cards.

February 16, 2010 at 6:43 pm
(26) Sallysalmon says:

Please do not do business with this company. I did not cancel after the seven day “free” trial period and was charged 14.95 twice on my account (and yes, I take full responsibility for not reading the fine print). When I discovered these charges I immediately called customer service to cancel. I talked with two representatives (very rude and condescending I might add) who claimed that all services had been cancelled. One month later there was another charge for 14.95 on my account. My husband called this time and they stated that they had no records of this charge and my membership had been cancelled. After reading several other forums about this company I know that I am not the only one who has faced this exact problem. I had to cancel my credit card so that no further charges would be added. BUYER BEWARE!

February 18, 2010 at 5:23 pm
(27) Isabelle says:

I called to cancel immediately, they said it was cancelled but wouldn’t give me a confirmation number and said I would be getting an email about cancelling. They proceeded to charge my card for the next four months. When I called to complain, they claimed I never cancelled! The only way to deal with this company is get your credit card issuer involved. Ask your card company for a “chargeback” request for the past charges because this company committed fraud. It will work and they will not only have to refund the money, but pay fees on top of it.

February 18, 2010 at 10:39 pm
(28) Mike says:

i actually like them. i’ve never really had a problem when i called, and im fine with the monthly charge.. because checking my credit is important to me.. and it costs a lot to get it checked randomly, so i dunno what all you are complaining about.. why would you not read the terms of service..? i always do in todays’ society.. and i really didn’t find a problem when i went over the terms and yeah. .i dunno, maybe you should be more aware next time?

SCAM!!! They say they won’t charge you but they do!!!

March 1, 2010 at 3:17 pm
(30) Karen M says:

DO NOT TRUST THEIR WEBSITE! I joined and canceled the same day in order to obtain a free copy of my credit report (you are entitled to one free report every 12 months by law). I was charged $24.95 because the system provide me with a combined report instead of the single report. Total scam.

March 3, 2010 at 4:17 pm
(31) Sarah says:

Consumer Revolution :For now on let us as consumers use a paypal secured transaction or a prepaid visa account let’s not let them get any more money than they deserve after we have canceled or through fine print. Let them get in little financial trouble and maybe they will not put everything that it important (the payment amount in fineprint). It’s not that hard to include cost in regular print the same as they do when they talk about the “free credit report.” Email everyone in your email address book your complaints or hints on how to avoid scams like this one or similar ones. The problem is they are not be policed so we as consumers have to police them ourselves. If you went into a store to buy products and all the prices were in fine print or you had to look to find the fine print you would not accept that because that would not be customary. Don’t let internet scams be customary and acceptable.

(33) steve says:

I tried this company because it is FREE. Got my report and decided not to keep the service so I cancelled the next day. Low and behold I discovered today they charged my credit card $26.00. I called and asked for a supervisor. She said the charge was for looking at 3 reports. Yet their website clearly states that if you unsubscribe if the specified period they WILL NOT CHARGE YOUR CREDIT CARD. I just finished filing reports to the Federal Trade Commission, my Credit Card Company and the Internet Crime Complaint Center. This place needs to be put out of business!

March 5, 2010 at 5:04 pm
(34) ara says:

This company is a scam- the “free” credit report isnt free, you end up paying $24.95 for 3 credit reports, and you must sign up for their monthly credit monitoring, which is $15/mo. You CANNOT cancel the membership on their website, you must call their 800 number mon-fri from 8-5. you only have 7 days to do it. they will no rescind the $14.95 fee is you call on the 7th day.

They scammed me $24.95 and I called and they REFUSED to refund my money. Reported them to the better business bureau in Ventura, Ca. (google it) and I had my money refunded in less than 24 hours.

Free Credit Report sucks they are scamers.
They got me for almost $40.00. I tried the trial period and then I canceled it. But when i wnet to check my a card I hardly use I found that they were still chargeing me. I called and they said they could not do anything. They really suck I will keep fighting to get my money back. So do not use this site they are a rip off. THEY OWE ME MONEY AND I WILL GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(38) Roxie Thomas says:

Watch out! Even if you are in the trial period, they will charge you $24.99 for a report. You don’t even know it happened and all of a sudden the charge shows up on your account. It isn’t clearly stated that you will be charged for the report.

March 29, 2010 at 5:47 pm
(39) Kay says:

This company is truly a scam. There should be a law regarding the use of the word “Free” in a name when applying for a business license. This company is giving nothing away “Free” unless someone is quick enough to turn around and cancel immediately. They will not send you an E-mail on the 5th or 6th day to remind you that you will become a paying member on the 7th day. They just keep going back into your account with charge after charge until you finally realize you are paying for something that you intended to get for “Free”. The name should read “FreeFor7DaysCreditReport.com” We all have been made to feel this is our stupidity, while this group is laughing all the way to the bank with our $$

April 9, 2010 at 9:41 am
(40) CAB09 says:

New law took effect on April 2. They now have mandatory message at top of webpage. All websites that claim “free” credit information hvae to have these messages. the government is the only one’s giving out free credit reports as required by law…and that’s only once in a year.

April 30, 2010 at 3:23 am
(41) ChiMan says:

I understand that all online services requiring a credit card number have terms and conditions, which the consumer is expected to read. I read the terms and conditions explaing the monthly charges. I signed up with the intention to cancel within a couple days of signing up to aviod charges. I’m sure a lot of people have been charged because they didn’t read these terms and condtions. I fully beleive that these people deserve it. If you put your card info online and don’t read what you sign up for, you’re ignorant. I fully understood the program. The issue I have with this company is their customer service. I called to cancel so I would not be charged. The customer service rep that I spoke with refused to believe that I was myself. She had me verify my information. I knew I gave it correctly, not only because it was my personal info, but because I was reading it from my account with their company online. Whatever the customer service rep saw had to be exactly what I was looking at with my account online. She still refused to believe that it as me after I repeated my date of birth several times, then hung up on me. I called back and was able to cancel with no problem though, but the fact that the CSR I spoke to at first refused to speak to me or assist me in anyway was extremely infuriating. Between the cock shiner in their commercials, and the CSRs that I’ve spoke with, I’m not completely sure that they employ anything except retards.

April 30, 2010 at 3:36 am
(42) Jeff says:

The terms and conditions are no problem with mee. I read and understood them. I was just getting a credit check to try to land a house I was looking to rent. It’s the customer service I received when I called to cancel is what was frustrating. I was told that I wasn’t me, and that if this account was to be cancelled the owner of the account would need to call. This because I verified my information incorrectly. What I verified was obviously my own information, it wouldn’t have frustrated me if I did verify it incorrectly. I know that I was right because I was on my account online while on the phone, so if I would’ve made a mistake I would’ve noticed and been able to correct it. I gave the exact information that my account that I was logged into said, and they still told me that I wasn’t me. I’m not completely sure that they employ anything but retards, judging by their incompetent monkeys they have answering phones and the cock shiner they have in their commercials.

(43) Gina says:

I too ordered this free service, just to get our scores and then cancelled the next day. I just noticed for the last two months I have been charged $7.47 for March and April. I finally had time to call them and they stated that I had excepted to continue the service at 50& off, which I explained I never would have said that. I do not want the service at all, at any cost. After the woman repeatedly said that her notes show that I did in fact agree to continue with at the discounted rate, I asked to talk with her manager because even though the two months were $14.94 I still wanted a refund, because I had cancelled in January. After being on hold for 5 mins, she came back in the line and told me that they would be issuing a credit for $24, which is odd because I am only due $14.91. We will see what happens,,,, what a total scam….

i wish i read these comments before i signed up. I signed up and got my report so that was all good. I logged off and i could no longer log back on. I called the company to give me my login information but refused to give it to me over the phone even though i said all my information out loud. They said i would receive an email within 10 minutes with the info and guess what? you guessed it, i never got ANYTHING! I called to cancel and i was still charged. Now i have to call my bank…this is what i get for being an idiot.

June 6, 2010 at 1:29 pm
(45) Jordan says:

They are TERRIBLE! I just spent fifteen minutes with them on the phone. This woman kept insisting I keep the service and kept telling me different reasons why. I politely told her about twelve times to cancel it because it was not free. She insisted I keep it for credit monitoring, but I do not WANT IT. I swear, I told her that so many times and she just wouldn’t listen. I finally got her to cancel my account but I’m not sure I trust her.

(48) Tammy Schmitt says:

This company is ridiculous and is a money scam!! I called and ordered it and they told me that it was a ONE time fee of $24.95 to review all 3 bureaus! Then the next month i was charged $14.95. I have had it for 3 months, which i was charged $14.95 a month for it. I called and told them i was being charged and they said that they had to of told me that it was a fee of $14.95 a month, but they didn’t! So today i decided to cancel it beofre the next payment was due and the guy argued on the phone with me about not cancelling it, and offered me a fee of $7.49 and i still said no thank you i wanted to cancel. He proceeded to insist that this was a good deal and when i finally said NO i don’t want this service anymore he copped an attitude with me. I received an email saying that my membership was cancelled and i also recieved a charge out of my checking acct of another fee of $24.95 as soon as i cancelled it!! I was so mad and i called and they told me that a supervisor was not avaliable and that i had to of ordered another subscription! I demanded a refund and they said that they can’t refund me my money! Now how ridiculous is that!? I wish someone would take care of this company because there are poor old people that are probably getting screwed and don’t even know it! This should be against the law!! And they can barely speak english!

(49) Fred says:

I wish I had read these first.

Yes, you’ll get your score, but you will be enrolled in a monthly program. While I understood that going in, I didn’t count on there being no way to opt out online. You have to call the company’s customer service outsourced in India and listen to someone try to sell you eight different ways before they will agree to cancel the service. The person I was talking to was deliberately trying to mislead me into thinking the account would be cancelled, but I pressed her each time until she switched to another script. Beware!

(51) burnt says:

Ok so aside from the misleading problem… I read the fine print… I basically just wanted to see my credit scores so I paid the fees…
THE SCAM IS THE SCORE WAS ALMOST 100 POINTS OFF ON ALL 3 BUREAUS.. I FREAKED WHEN IT LOOKED LIKE MY SCORES TANKED… AND HAD A MORTGAGE FRIEND RUN IT… HE SENT ME A COPY AND MY ACTUAL SCORES WERE MUCH HIGHER THAN WHAT THIS COMPANY GAVE ME… I called to complain and they advised me they are the actual scores from the credit bureaus… it is a fomula that their system uses and generates an estimate…

NOW HOW DOES IT GET MORE MISLEADING THAN THIS?

To add insult to injury, FreeCreditReport.Com will also sell your email address. Two of my friends each used the service because they needed a credit report to submit to a landlord on an apartment they were looking for. They got their reports from FCR.Com and each were both suddenly inundated with SPAM. It’s so bad that one friend is changing his email address enough he is self employed and uses it for business. And I never liked their ubiquitous commercials with the lip-syncing Quebecer (who doesn’t even speak English!)

Company is a scam. Offers free credit card score. I assumed they needed my credit card information to give me the score. I was automatically enrolled with a credit card service I never read about (I assume it was hidden in fine print somewhere on the site which I never saw). Discover card would not allow me to refuse the charge. So I was SCAMMED and Discover knows it but tells me the info. was hidden somewhere on the site and Buyer Beware. Both companies S–K.

Add me to the list of victims. The website is meant to be confusing. I inadvertently signed up for a service that charged me $25. This service is something separate than the free report. I was given a $10 refund and no apology. I am also wondering why the service is advertised as free, you have to provide your debit/credit card to sign up.

If you you sign up, make sure you scroll to the bottom of the first page after you provide your debit/credit card and click on “no thanks.” That will avoid the $25 charge.

Not only are they not free, their credit score numbers are based on their own calculation. This “weighting” as they call it, is not used by any lender I have dealt with, and the numbers they give you at FreeCreditReport.com are generally 20-60 pts higher than your actual FICO score, which is the rating lenders use to determine credit worthiness. So basically, they sell you the service, and provide you with useless information that makes you think you are in better shape than you are in, all in order to sell you credit monitoring.

Free credit report should be held liable for false addvertising. There was not one place on the website that I saw that said anything about $24.99 charge to my account. There was a box at the beginning that offered something for $1.00(to the right) but I clicked on the left button for free 2 day access to my account. Like others I was offered a $10.00 refund. Not only did this happen once but they tried tom take an additional $24.99 out at the same time which they refunded completely. There response was I pushed a button by mistake!! It was the button to try this scam out in the first place!!!

freecreditreport.com is a scam. I paid for one report and they keep billing my card card on a monthly basis. I did not sign up for the monthly service.

so basically i called to cancel my free trial and it was like 5 hours past 9 days trial period which i didn’t even know about, the guy told me my membership will be cancelled and he would make sure that i won’t be charge. He lied. On the next day my credit card was charged 14.95 and when i called they said i called on the tenth day to cancel it and they can’t refund it. So basically 5 hours past the free trial cost me 14.95. The website called freecreditreport.com but it’s not free at all, it’s a scam, they are bunch of liars so i will try to get my money back through the bank.

I have seen many places that say freecreditreport.com is a scam. However, you can easily get your $1 credit score from them if you do the following things.

1) call them with questions, the customer service was friendly in answering my questions and directed me to their other site: freecreditscore.com (both run by Experian)

2) go to freecreditscore.com and sign up for the $1 credit score trial membership

3) view your score, write it down, and then call their customer service to cancel your account right after or at least within 7 days so you will not be billed

The customer service was a typical pushy salesman, but was nice and In the end I was able to call, sign up, and call to cancel within 15minutes.

Tricky, Yes….Scam, No

I never went to the freecreditreport.com site, nor requested, nor received a credit report, but somehow Experian charged my credit card $14.95. It was a new credit card that I hadn’t even used at that point, so I was shocked when I saw I had a balance. When I called my credit card company, they said this is happening all the time, and are treating the charge as fraud, since that is what it is.

The worst company I’ve ever dealt with! On April 8, 2010, I applied for Free Credit Report.com report because they advertised one free report a year and I wanted to buy a house. Little did I know that they had tacked on a 19.95 fee each month unbeknowst to me (It is November now and I just recognized the pattern-I had initially thought it was an Experian charge for freezing and unfreezing my credit–which it was not). I thought free creditreport.com was set up so that we could check our credit once a year and make sure it was ok. With all of the other bad people out there trying to steal our credit and use it for thier own purposes, what chance do we have when the credit agencies themselves are stealing from us? I’m a secretary. $20 a month is a LOT of money to my family and I. Yet we are now helpless because you cannot fight the big credit agencies. Or can you? If there is a class action suit or a lawyer that will help, I would like to know, just out of principle alone. This has nothing to do with their awful customer service either, who talk over you when you try and explain how morally wrong this is. And now I am reading about how many other people they have stolen from and the government is LETTING them. What a sad state our nation has become. God Bless America indeed.

add me to the list. very deceptive. I used these guys a few years ago and don’t remember being enrolled in anything automatically. It’s a lame, deceptive practice. Couldn’t get a refund. Called as soon as the charge posted to my account. Said he couldn’t cancel as it was after bank hours. Terrible. What a freakin gyp. I asked him what I actually got for the 19.95/mo that I’m stuck with paying. He said I could check my credit score every day for free. BIG WHUP. Who the hell needs to check their credit score EVERY DAY? I asked them is that all I’m able to do for 19.95/mo, and he said that’s it. Their business practice is to get enough suckers (like myself) to ‘enroll’ is this ridiculous member service, and they’ll make money. Terrible terrible business.

Freecreditreport.com gets you with the trial period. They have a “pacific time” phone number, and an “eastern time”. I called the pacific time, the answering message said they were closed….because they were actually on Eastern time. I called 7:00am the next morning, they already billed my card. I cancelled immediately….my lesson…don’t wait until the last day of your trial period….!!!!!!!!!! They’ll getcha! Now I need to make sure they don’t KEEP billing my card!
