Credit Card Billing Error? Put It In Writing

Thursday April 10, 2008

Mistakes happen. Sometimes they happen to your credit card billing statement. If you're like many people, the first thing you do when you find a billing error is call your card's customer service. While there's nothing wrong with this approach, especially if it gets the problem solved, the creditor isn't legally required to respond to disputes made by phone.

The Fair Credit Billing Act, the federal law that lets you dispute credit card billing errors, requires you to dispute these types of errors in writing. That is, if you want the law on your side if the creditor doesn't cooperate. Read How to Respond to Credit Card Billing Errors to learn more about the FCBA and the right way to dispute errors on your credit card statements.

yes, i agree put it in writing, but call also.

I work for a credit card company, procssing all kinds of request that come through by mail, email, fax ect, and we try our best but many slip through the cracks and their are more delays in processing versus calling on the phone. although not always at the fault of the company. Here are some tips for getting you request processed if you send in in writing.

Remeber to include your name, account number, address and phone number on your letter, don’t just send it in with a statment top, and if you have muliple pages put that info on every page
A lot of people don’t include their info and if we can’f find an accoutn we can’t help you.
Also type your request, or at least write neatly double spaced PRINt on lined paper, again i can’t help you if i can’t read it. And i can’t read scribble on a page.
