Do You Need a Credit Card To Build Credit?

By March 12, 2008

Follow me on:

Building a good credit history is important if you want to get a job, buy a house, buy a car, get a good insurance rate, among other things. A good credit score doesn't just happen. Using credit wisely is the only way to raise your credit score. Do you need a credit card to do it? That's precisely the question posed in the Credit / Debt forums by 'radhakrishnan.k'.
Few days back i had a discussion with my friend about this, he was telling me that if we dont keep a credit card, our credit history will not be good.
Do we need to use a credit card to get good credit history?
Visit the forum to see my answer and to answer based on your own experiences. If you've managed to build a good credit history without using credit cards, we'd especially like to hear from you.

24. No kids yet. Never had a credit card in my life, only debit. Dropped out of HS @ 18 and took the FL GED test @ 19.. passed. Didn’t go to college. What can I say? I have a job that pays me 20 an hour… I just never felt satisfied until I used my OWN money. My parents had a nightmeare with credit cards which never made me want get get one myself. Yeah so at the end it depends who is lucky enough to get that high paying job, like in the music industry it depends who u know. Too many people in this world (or at least the eastern US reigon). Paid for my 08 Scion Tc in cash… yep. U don’t need a credit card but hell a lot of credit card company’s are on my ass!!! I ignore! =D

the question was – do you need a credit card in order to maintain a good credit history – and for what other reasons do we need to have a credit card – what happens if we don’t have one -
