Tired Of Shuffling Through Multiple Credit Cards?

Tuesday August 28, 2007
Are you one of those people who stands in line shuffling through 10 or 15 credit and debit cards before finally finding the right one? iCache, a neat, new gadget, might solve your problem by collecting all your credit card information and storing it until you need to use it.

How it works from CNN Money:
Users register their cards on the company Web site and upload the information into the iCache. When they want to use it, they activate the device with a fingerprint on its biometric strip, scroll through a list of cards on its screen and choose one. Out pops a plastic card with a magnetic stripe, temporarily loaded with the chosen card's data. Just swipe the card and pop it back into the iCache. After one use, the information on the card disappears. The device even works with loyalty cards, such as those handed out by supermarkets.
I immediately begin to question privacy and security.
  • What happens if I lose the device? According to iCache, the device will only turn on with my fingerprint and erases the data if the device is tampered with.
  • To what extent must the device be "tampered with" before the data is deleted?
  • How sophisticated is the fingerprint technology used with iCache? Do a search on "hacking fingerprint scanners" and you'll see that the security isn't foolproof.
  • How do I know all my credit card information is safe in iCache's systems? Personally, I don't particularly like having to enter my credit card information into the iCache website to upload it onto the device. It would be safer if users could load each credit card into the device, have the device read the credit card, and then store credit card information.
iCache is supposed to go on sale in early 2008 for $99.
