Closing Credit Cards Without The Credit Card Number

Friday August 24, 2007
Q: After I ordered my credit report, I saw numerous credit cards with low limits that I haven't used in years. I would like to close some of these credit cards, but I no longer have the credit card number. Only a few digits of the credit card number are printed on my credit report. What's the best way to get the credit card numbers and close these accounts?

A: I detailed the answer in How To Close A Credit Card Without The Credit Card Number, but here's a summary of the steps.
  • Decide which cards to close and which to leave open.
  • Call the company issuing the card to find out your credit card number.
  • Once you have the card number you can have the creditor close the account.
