Have You Considered Consumer Credit Counseling?

Saturday June 30, 2007
When you feel like you have no where else to turn for help with your mounting credit card bills, consumer credit counseling may be the answer. But how do you decide if you need credit counseling?

  • You have more than two credit cards and can't make the minimum payments on all of them.
  • You have been unsuccessful in reaching a payment agreement with your creditors.
The primary service offered by credit counselors is a debt management plan, or DMP. If the plan is accepted by your creditors, your minimum payment and interest rate will be lowered. You'll remain on the DMP until you have completely repaid your credit card debt or you cancel it by choice.

A good credit counselor will help you evaluate all options available to you rather than steer you in the direction of one specific solution.

This type of service is a fico score killer. They will note the account as being under a debt management plan, good luck triying to improve your scores after that.

According to myFICO.com, whether or not you are participating in credit counseling is not included in the FICO score calculation.

The fact that you are participating does not tank your score. what tanks your score is the derogatory remarks that each creditor will add to the their credit lines as a result of being on such program.
